I am a practicing Yogi (have only tried Hatha). Would like to further my studies of Yoga and learn meditation practices. Can anybody recommend a place in Brooklyn New York (Park Slope and surrounding areas) where I can learn the two?
Hi bestyoga
back pain is a nasty one, maybe there is something wrong in the way you practice (for ex. too agressive in the pose..)
or you are going through an alignment period where every part of the body is looking for its proper place
don't despair, see it as a temporary situation. by following a proper, regular and steady practice all sorts of pain will dissappear. it is important for yourself to try and localize the pain and see if you can pinpoint it, being concious about it, it will accelerate the healing process. one day without even noticing the pain will be gone
San Salutations I think is one of the best remedies. pick the variation which is less strainuous (pref the one with the Cobra pose-Bhujangasana) and begin every morning with 3-6 rounds and slowly you add up as you are getting more flexible and warm. always finish with Shavasana. as you can see is not only one pose that does the healing but the combination and the way they are executed, like synchronizing breath with action and apply Bandha's.
is not a bad idea to see a Shiatsu practitioner, Shiatsu is very powerfull. i talk from personal experience, i recommend even for those who feel ok as it will bring more balance and harmony to the whole. a powerfull boost in Yoga practice
hope i could help
cheers
Yoga is an ancient philosophy of life as well as a system of exercises that encourages the union of mind, body, and spirit. In the words of Patanjali, author of the Yoga Sutras, "yoga is the ability to focus the mind on a single point without distraction." Yoga is a physical discipline; it uses the body and breathing to develop self-awareness and mental clarity.

Hi kim.. i am from banson side in Brooklyn. As far i know there aren't much yoga centers in Brooklyn. To attaned a batter session you may have to drive to southeast corner of 42nd Street and 5th Ave. There's a awesome yoga center named yoga sutra and their contact number is 212.490.1443. Many yoga centers don't do Yoga Marketing which makes it difficult for peoples to find near and batter locations.
